Welcome to the Foundation Stage at South Petherwin Primary School.
Hello and we welcome you to our school. Foundation Stage is where it all begins! Our team is made up of Miss Paynter (teacher) and Mrs Coltart and Mrs Turner who are our Learning Support Assistants.
Foundation stage is all about laying the foundations for lifelong learning. We work to develop children’s skills in the Prime areas of learning, these are Personal, Social and Emotional development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. By creating a firm and well rooted base in these prime learning areas children develop into mature, well-rounded individuals who enjoy learning and are ready continue their journey throughout the school and beyond.
Our curriculum is child led. We plan our learning by following the children’s interests.
We spend a lot of time outside in our wonderful school grounds riding bikes, climbing on equipment, mixing magical potions and building camp fires. This provides children with the opportunity to develop team working skills, communication, physical skills and most importantly the time to be a child in a safe and secure environment. We run Mucky Maths, Wellie Walks and outdoor learning sessions every week. This is planned time in the school grounds where we build dens, camp-fires for cooking and develop bush skills in a safe environment.
At South Petherwin we teach children to read using a scheme called 'Read, Write inc.' Every day we learn a new sound and then use that sound in our writing. This scheme has proven itself to be a very effective teaching programme and children leave the Foundation stage confident readers.
We hope you and your child are very happy at South Petherwin School. We love our school and hope you do too. If you need any additional information about the Foundation Stage at South Petherwin, please feel free to contact us.
