Trauma Informed Schools

We have three fully trained Trauma Informed Schools Practitioners at South Petherwin School who have completed ten days of intensive training:
  • Mrs Little
  • Miss Wills
  • Ms Mills

However, it is a whole school approach and all staff have received training to support with the delivery of the programme.

Trauma Informed Schools (TIS) draws on the latest research, including neuroscience and is a whole school approach.  Its strength is that it pulls together work from different disciplines to provide one model that is systematic, dynamic and relevant and helps adults respond to a child's emotional situation in a way that supports their emotional and social development.

Thrive is a specific way of working with all children that helps to develop their social and emotional well-being, enabling them to engage with life and learning. It supports them in becoming more self-assured, capable and adaptable, providing a firm foundation for academic achievement.  TIS:

  • helps a child get ready to learn
  • enhances their learning
  • builds positive relationships between a child and his/her peers
  • improves attainment
